A SPECIAL 'GUEST' POSTING BY VICTOR SALAZAR, WEED & SEED COORDINATOR FOR THE SILVER SPRING REGIONAL CENTER
Greetings dear colleagues, friends and neighbors! Once again we find ourselves in the last 90 days of another year where thoughts of traveling to see loved ones at Thanksgiving and holiday cheer accompanying December begin to creep into our minds.
Whether it was intentional or accidental it seems appropriate that before our focus turns to close friends and family, 24 years ago a day had been set aside, an unofficial holiday of sorts, to draw our attention not to ourselves but instead on the needs of others within our community. That day IS Community Service Day.
While news outlets focus on the recent miraculous rescue of miners trapped under the Earth’s surface in a distant land, unheralded friends, neighbors and organizations are currently organizing and working to create their own miracles here in Montgomery County. Most activities and events will take place on October 23rd and October 24th. Some occur earlier.
An example of this work will took place last Saturday, October 16, 2010, at Broad Acres Park in Silver Spring. Annually for the past several years, partners of the Weed & Seed program that include Broad Acres Elementary School, the Broad Acres PTA, St. Camillus Church, Montgomery and Park Police, the State’s Attorney’s Office, the YMCA, the Long Branch Athletic Association, and various elected officials rolled up their sleeves and cleaned-up the park. Michael Avant, Director of Site Based Services, YMCA, led this great effort.
How about YOU supporting our troops? On October 23rd, 2010, Downtown Silver Spring is holding “Make-Your-Own” Thanksgiving Day Cards to help bring cheer to members of the military stationed overseas. Paper, Markers, Glitter, and glue are provided. You supply the creativity. This is a perfect event for children! This event runs from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. near the water fountain. For more information email Lillian at lilliandowntownssp@gmail.com
AND DON'T FORGET: THAT SAME DAY (October 23rd) WILL BE THE 'GET-OUT-THE-VOTE' RALLY ON VETERANS PLAZA - AND THE INAUGURAL DAY OF THE FENTON STREET MARKET ON VETERANS PLAZA AS WELL. For more info visit the other posting on this blog HERE.
There are many worthwhile projects in need of your time. Make a commitment to participate. For a more complete listing of Community Service Day Projects in need of your talents and your time click the link below to the Volunteer Center website.
