AMAZING COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES AT THE
SILVER SPRING CIVIC BUILDING AND VETERANS PLAZA
This coming week our Civic Building wears its first name “CIVIC” very well indeed… Almost every day there will be an opportunity to engage your neighbors and friends as we continue building a vibrant, energetic, and robust community… Please plan on joining us for one – or all – of these exciting and meaningful community engagement opportunities.
Saturday January 8th Noon
Ice Rink Celebration Join First Lady Catherine Leggett, our honorary guest, to celebrate the official opening of the Veterans Plaza Ice Rink. There will be music, fun, and games – including a hockey demonstration.
Sunday January 9th 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Kramer Gallery Opening Reception for its 2nd Show Please stop by to celebrate the opening of this, the 2nd show at the Civic Building’s wonderful Kramer Gallery. The show is “Mixing It Up”, an exhibition featuring the works of three Montgomery county visual artists working in glass, painting and fiber arts.
Monday January 10th 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Silver Spring Citizens Advisory Board Meeting Our Citizens Advisory Board is kicking off the New Year with an exciting meeting, welcoming Discovery Communications to dialogue with the community. We’ll also have the opportunity to catch up with the Silver Spring Town Center Inc., as well as hear detailed reports from our Chair and Director.
Thursday January 13th 7:00 p.m – 9:00 p.m.
County Executive Budget Forum Come join County Executive Leggett in this critical conversation. As he puts it: “These public forums give our residents an opportunity to tell me what’s important to them as I prepare next year’s operating budget for submission to the County Council on March 15... In light of the shortfalls that we are facing, input from residents for the FY 12 budget is crucial in helping us determine priorities.”
Thursday January 13th 7:00 p.m – 9:00 p.m.
Energy Reduction Through Architecture (Part of Montgomery Planning Department’s Speaker Series) Leading experts on sustainable architecture will show how energy independent, regenerative buildings can slow climate change. Planners, developers, home builders and renovators, and anyone interested in advancing sustainability don’t want to miss this event!
Friday January 14th 5:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Freedom School This is a relatively unstructured gathering of youth (coordinated by a consortium of youth groups) that come together every Friday night to basically improve their self esteem before venturing out for the weekend.
Monday January 17th 12:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
MLK Weekend of Service Event* Join GapBusters (a local youth organization) as they coordinate this year’s MLK Service Day events. The event will include service projects from 12:30PM-3:00PM followed by a tribute which will be held at Strathmore Hall at 4:00pm.
*CALL TO ACTION: A related MLK Weekend of Service event in our community in need of volunteers is the Giant Food (Blair Park) Saturday Janaury 15th from 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Please e-mail Victor.Salazar@MontgomeryCountyMD.gov letting him know you are interested. (Great school service hour opportunity!)
And as if all of that was not enough, you can join us in one or more of the many other community engagement activities provided by other organizations and agencies and open to the public in the Civic Building, including: Zumba classes (Monday and Wednesdays); Senior Fit (Friday morning); Tiny Tots Drama Class (Monday morning); Music and Movement (Saturday mornings).
