So you want to know what is going on in Silver Spring?

-----------------
It seems that we’ll never get to the ‘holy grail’ of ‘event lists’: i.e.: a single point or link that lists everything we are interested in.

In the absence of such ideal place, there are a series of existing links that provide for a wealth of information regarding ‘what is going on’ in Silver Spring for people that are interested in community life. These are mostly calendars by private entities, public agencies, and/or non-profits that give a good indication of the wonderful vitality and vibrancy of activities in Silver Spring.

No such list of calendars can be complete… But, in the spirit of ‘not letting the perfect get in the way of the good’, here’s the start of such a list… PLEASE chime in if you know of others:

DOWNTOWN SILVER SPRING

Silver Spring Downtown web-site… If you have not visited this site lately, you are really missing something. Wonderful list of upcoming events in the broader downtown Silver Spring area.

Downtown Silver Spring web-site… Best place to get a fix of what is going on in the ‘core’ of downtown (Ellsworth area), including Regal movie times, etc.

ART-CENTRIC

http://www.creativemoco.com/calendar "Do and Go"... The Arts & Humanities of Montgomery County official 'go to' site. Comprehensive list of member programming.

http://www.visitmontgomery.com/events-calendar/ Visit Montgomery... The Conference and Visitors Bureau's (CVB) official site. Very good for all things 'touristy', as well as performances and arts.

http://visitmaryland.org/Pages/Welcome.aspx Visit Maryland... The official site of Maryland's Tourism office. As good a comprehensive list for 'things to do' throughout the State as their is, focusing primarily on established destinations.

http://msac.org/ Maryland Arts Council official site... Very good, if you want a comprehensive look at what is going on in all corners of the State with arts organizations.

http://www.theatreindc.com/ Theatre in DC... A very comprehensive list of plays in the broader DMV area. (Search for "Silver Spring" to get the local flavor; check out the 'map' function also.)

NEWS OUTLETS

Washington Post’s Going Out Guide Make sure you ‘search’ for ‘Silver Spring’… Solid listing of commercial opportunities

Silver Spring Patch Events Calendar… An excellent ‘searchable’ events listing

Silver Spring Voice Events List… Easy to read list

Gazette’s List of Events… Probably the most comprehensive list of events, all with easy to follow web-links

VENUE SPECIFIC

AFI Movie Schedule… A direct link to one of our premier gems in Silver Spring.

Takoma Park / Silver Spring Montgomery College Campus… Amazing array of events and happenings, many in the new beautiful Performance Art space – see “Events” list on the right hand side of the page.

Roundhouse Theater
Roundhouse Theater's repertoire of events at their Silver Spring location.

SILVER SPRING REGIONAL CENTER - centric

Silver Spring Regional Center Community Engagement Opportunities in the Civic Building and Veterans Plaza Of course I am biased to our own :-) … This is a new attempt to display graphically the opportunities for connecting by participating in events already planned in this, your community’s living room and patio.

Silver Spring Regional Center Official Calendar… Civic meetings, mostly Advisory Groups (Citizens Advisory Board, Urban District, etc.)

FACEBOOK PAGES

Facebook Announcements… Various organizations in the area have great listings of events on their Facebook page. (We listed these on a recent blog posting – see ‘comment’ for additional ones; we have not added them yet.)

WHAT COULD BE (examples from elsewhere)
http://pinklineproject.com/ The Pink Line Project... From our friends in DC.

http://www.artsboston.org/ Arts Boston... GREAT search engine! (hosting provided by artsopolisnetwork.com)

http://www.washingtonpost.com/gog/?tid=gog DC's Going Out Guide... From the folks down the street as well.

HAVE OTHERS? Please leave them as 'comments' in this blog...

{PLUS: Don't forget to become a 'follower' of this blog so you get future postings automatically.}

Wait, maybe there should be a "Silver Downtown Spring" website, too. Someone alert the Department of Redundancy Department.

Pyramid Atlantic Art Center will celebrate its 30th birthday with an Open House on April 9th from 2-5 pm. The festivities will include artist demonstrations, studio tours, exhibits, live music, hands on arts activities, door prizes, art raffles AND, of course, cake & ice cream!

Open House at Pyramid Atlantic, 8230 Georgia Ave, Silver Spring MD

“Artists from all over the world, youth from our area schools, families from the Greater DC Metro Area, thousands of people come through our doors each year,” said Executive Director, Jose Dominguez. ”We are grateful to be here and to serve so many, in such different ways.”

“We are so excited that artists -- teachers, residents, and interns -- who have been involved with the organization over the years, will be joining us again on this special day,” said Artistic Director Gretchen Schermerhorn.

Long known as an art gallery and papermaking, printmaking, and book arts studios, Pyramid Atlantic serves emerging and mid-career artists from around the world. Our Arts Education Programs bring low-cost and no-cost arts education to people of all ages, regardless of financial barriers. Community Engagement programs create opportunities for the public to engage with the art of papermaking, and print-making, as well as experience the best in the books arts through our Book Arts Fair. In addition, we encourage the diverse talents of our community via live performance in the gallery and at our retail store, ArtSpring.
