JOEL FREDERIKSEN & FRIENDS – FREE CONCERT AT LIBRARY OF CONGRESS
Coolidge Auditorium
Rose of Sharon: 100 Years of American Music (1770-1870)
Joel Frederiksen’s Rose of Sharon CD made the Billboard Top 10 for 2011. His new album is Requiem for a Pink Moon: Elizabethan Tribute to Nick Drake. Steve Winick writes: “The concert will be the perfect thing for people who like a little bit of Classical served up with their Folk. There will be Shaker songs, Sacred Harp, Black Spirituals, music from revival meetings and battlefields, a little bit of Stephen Foster…plus the then-new music of America’s first composers, such as William Billings.”
For tickets:
1) Call the Music Division at (202) 707-8432 and ask them to hold tickets for you.
2) TicketMaster (there will be a small fee just to process your reservation, but the tickets are still free). Go to: www.ticketmaster.com or call (202) 397-7328.
3) Ask for tickets at the door on the day of the concert, and hope there are some left. We don't anticipate a sell-out, so if you find yourself unexpectedly free on Saturday, this could work

ETHEL with special guest TODD RUNDGREN
Tell Me Something Good
Todd Rundgren was at the top of the pop charts in the early 1970s with his inventive work as a solo rock artist and later branched out to become a sought-after producer for major rock groups. He continues to expand his artistic scope with new ideas and new projects. In 2005 the contemporary string quartet ETHEL, an ensemble acclaimed by Andante.com as “…a mighty amplified force, with style, breadth, power, chops, and rock ’n roll spirit,” teamed up with Rundgren for a tour of the United States and Europe. The program will include solo performances by Rundgren and ETHEL as well as collaborative repertoire. ETHEL will perform Judd Greenstein’s Octet 1979, which incorporates the sound of synthesizers from the 1970s; Arvo Pärt’s Spiegel im Spiegel; and a selection from Lou Harrison’s Quartet Set. Todd Rundgren’s solo repertoire and ETHEL/Rundgren collaborative repertoire, to be announced from the stage, may include the Rundgren songs “I Saw the Light,” “Flamingo,” “ Zen Archer,” “Stood Up,” “Soul Brother” and “Black Maria” as well as “Lord Chancellor's Nightmare Song” by Gilbert and Sullivan.
