Highlights of Recent Special Events
October 20, 2013 – Over 100 neighbors and friends attended the Silver Spring Launch Celebration and heard Stuart Rosenthal, Editor/Publisher of the Beacon newspapers talk about the village movement.  

October 23, 2013 – Several Village members toured the stunning post-modern international headquarters of United Therapeutics Corporation new headquarters in downtown Silver Spring, 

October 29, 2013 – The Village Lunch Bunch convened at Adega Wine Cellars & Café for lunch and then several members proceeded to the Silver Spring Civic Building for the SPARKLE Workshop on Memoir Writing, “Something I Want You to Know” presented by Justine Rowden. 

Weekly Events for Silver Spring Village Members

Wednesdays at 10-11AM: Village Coffee Hour at Kefa Café .Holiday The coffee hour will not be held on November 27,  December 25, and January 1 due to the holidays.  The Café is located at 963 Bonifant Street. Park at a metered space on the street or in a county garage. Do not park in the Capital One Bank lot; they tow.  Call the Village if you need a ride: 301-503-7401.  


Thursdays at 2PM: Leisurely Paced Walk in Sligo Park. Weather permitting. The walk will not be held on November 28, December 26,, and January 2 due to the holidays. Find the walking group from downtown Silver Spring by turning left onto Sligo Creek Parkway from Wayne Avenue and parking in the first parking area on the left. If you would prefer to come via Colesville Road from downtown Silver Spring, turn right onto Sligo Creek Parkway.  Proceed on Sligo until the **fourth** parking area on the right side, just at a "stop sign ahead" warning sign.


Special Events for Silver Spring Village Members  


November 7th (Thursday), 11AM – Friday Morning Music Club at the Strathmore Mansion. Professional-quality amateur musicians perform Mendelssohn, Rossini, Wolf, Fauré and Claude Bolling. (Bolling’s work has been classified as “crossover” combing classical and jazz.)  A light lunch at member Peggy Gervasi’s home will follow this free concert. RSVP by

November 10th  (Sunday), 2-5PM – Potomac River Jazz Club Autumn Big Band Bash featuring the Bay Side Big Band at Rosensteel Knights of Columbus Hall, 9707 Rosensteel Avenue (at Forest Glen Road), Silver Spring . When was the last time you enjoyed a 17-piece orchestra playing 40s swing and jazz? Come sit with us and listen to this great music, and, maybe, dance. November 17th (Sunday), 1-3PM – Souper Sunday at Mae Novak’s home. Join us for a delicious bowl of homemade soup followed by a talk by Bernadette Sweeney, noted local attorney who specializes in elder law. She will speak on important legal aspects of aging in place, including what documents to prepare ahead of time and by whom they should be kept. November 21st (Thursday), 4 - 7PM – SPARKLE Games Night.  This event at the Silver Spring Civic Building allows people of ages to join volunteer members from the community as they teach and play a variety of old/new board and card games. The games will include strategy games like   Canasta, Spades, Scrabble, Hearts, Cribbage, and Euchre. This intergenerational event is free, open to the public, and co-sponsored by the Silver Spring Town Center and by the Silver Spring Village. RSVP@silverspringtowncenter.org

November 28th (Thursday), 4-6PM – Thanksgiving Dinner. Home alone for Thanksgiving? Join us instead for a traditional group Thanksgiving Day dinner. RSVP at 301 920-0010.

December 4th (Wednesday), 2-4PM - Guided Meditation. Led by the Meditation Museum of Silver Spring (www.meditationmuseum.org), this workshop will include simple tips for a journey toward personal and spiritual empowerment. This program is jointly sponsored by the Silver Spring Town Center and the Silver Spring Village. December 5th (Thursday), 11AM - Friday Morning Music Club at Strathmore Mansion followed by a discussion of the performance over a light lunch at the home of Peggy & Fred Gervasi . Professional-quality amateur musicians perform music by Doppler, Griffes, Rossini, Respighi, Shinohara, Gubaidulina, and Barber. December 13th (Friday) 2PM - Movie Matinee "Love, Actually" at Cynna Janus's house.  Celebrate the holidays with drinks, popcorn, laughs, and tears while watching this charming Christmas movie. December 22nd (Sunday) 2-5PMChristmas Tree-trimming Party at Roberta Gosier's house.
