In the Heights centers on a community of characters living in the neighborhood, El Barrio, of Washington Heights, on the northern tip of Manhattan. At the center of the show is Usnavi, a bodega owner who looks after the aging Cuban lady next door, pines for the gorgeous girl working in the neighboring beauty salon, and dreams of escaping to the shores of his native Dominican Republic. Meanwhile, Nina, a childhood friend of Usnavi’s, has returned to the neighborhood from her first year at college with surprising news for her parents, who have spent their life savings on building a better life for her. Ultimately, Usnavi and the residents of Washington Heights get a dose of what it really means to be home.

Graffiti artists, punk rockers, and a lobotomy patient or two will scale a scaffold set to present Walt Whitman High School’s imaginative interpretation of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street: A Musical Thriller! Sweeney Todd features a live orchestra, three dozen singer-actors, and an accomplished technical crew numbering more than 50, plus vocal direction by Jeffrey Davidson and music direction by Terry Alvey. Following the story of a homicidal barber seeking revenge on a corrupt judge, Whitman’s ambitious production of Sweeney Todd is a haunting examination of mankind’s morality … or lack thereof … revealing a community consumed by love, vengeance, and despair. Director Christopher Gerken, a Tony nominee for excellence in theatre education, shifts the Sondheim musical from its traditional setting in Victorian England to the 1980s punk scene. The result is at once shocking and enchanting, as the bone-chilling classic score melds impeccably with the London punk/goth counterculture.

Mosaic Theater launches its inaugural season with a world-premiere epic about the madness and majesty of Rwanda. Raymond, an African film student at NYU enthralled with the mysteries of Alfred Hitchcock, is compelled by a mentor's death to return to Rwanda to uncover a deeper horror story: the roots of violence that have destroyed his family in the 1994 Rwandan genocide -- including his beloved grandfather, a Tutsi master storyteller whose legacy Raymond seeks to redeem. The ghosts of King Leopold and Mark Twain (played by John Lescault) intertwine with other plotlines Raymond pursues as a Hutu government minister falls in love with a Tutsi woman and the head of UN peacekeepers, haunted by those he was unable to save, struggles with his own will to live. Award-winning, critically acclaimed, passionate and playful, Al Petteway and Amy White offer a well conceived blend of musical styles. Their repertoire includes original, traditional, contemporary Celtic and Appalachian influenced music with occasional nods to rock and jazz. Their performances feature acoustic guitar, mandolin, Celtic harp, piano, banjo, lap dulcimer, world percussion, and evocative vocals. Before moving from the Washington, DC area to the mountains of Western NC, the duo won 50 WAMMIE awards. They have since won an INDIE, and Petteway won a GRAMMY as well as being voted one of the Top 50 Guitarists of all time by the readers of Acoustic Guitar Magazine. CyberTrad is a musical experiment that combines melodic sensibilities from traditional Irish and Breton music, and blends them with rhythmic elements of contemporary Quebecois, funk, and Hip Hop. The project features Matthew Olwell on flute, vocals, and percussion, Dominic “Shodekeh” Talifero on human Beatbox, and Aimee Curl on vocals. Original compositions and arrangements by Matthew Olwell make CyberTrad both familiar and intriguing. MATTHEW OLWELLhas been performing and teaching at festivals and theaters across North America and Europe since 1996. He grew up in a family of wooden flute instrument-makers, immersed in a world of music, dance, and theatre, and performed for nine years with the Maryland-based Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble. A co-founder of Good Foot Dance Company, Matthew is a multimedia artist who ascribes to his grandfather’s definition of a dilettante: “one who delights in many things.” You could call SHODEKEH (a.k.a. Dominic Earle Shodekeh Talifero) a beatboxer or a vocal percussionist, if you want to feel a little more refined about it. But what the Baltimore-based musician seems to be more than anything is a chameleon, breathing out entire rhythm and bass tracks and blending them into a borderless range of performance situations. Shodekeh has moved from Beatboxing’s Hip Hop roots to explore innovative collaborations with a wide range of traditional artists, including Tuvan Throat Singing, Lithuanian Folk Music, Experimental, Funk, Jazz, Rock, Classical, Ballet & various forms & techniques of Modern Dance. Singer AIMEE CURL grew up singing in church and with her family. In her early teens, she learned the lap dulcimer and joined her first band. She met other musicians, started singing more, and began experimenting with other instruments such as guitar, fiddle, and bass. She left home and spent the next ten years playing the electric bass and touring the country with a band named ThaMuseMeant before studying at the New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music in NYC where she picked up the upright bass fiddle. As a singer, she has a most distinctive voice with emotion and sincerity that makes even the most hardened listener soften and swoon.

John McCutcheon's friend, fellow musician and playwright Si Kahn wrote this one man show for McCutcheon. It is an imagined version of the last night of Swedish/American labor organizer and musician Joe Hill's life as he awaits death in a Utah prison cell. McCutcheon performs the show in costume and character as Hill, telling stories and singing Hill's songs. McCutcheon released an album on May 1 (Labor Day in most of the world's countries) of this year also called “Joe Hill's Last Will”.

Celebrating the increasing US-Cuba understanding, Cantigas presents a sampling of Cuba’s rich and diverse choral traditions. Cantigas also explores connections between English and Spanish poetic traditions with two choral suites inspired by iconic poets Shakespeare and Cervantes: Three Elizabethan Songs by R. Cantigas presents the world premiere of La sangre derramada, a composition for mixed choir and classical guitar by Chilean composer Javier Farías, commissioned for this 25thAnniversary. The composition is based on Federico García Lorca’s poem Llanto por Ignacio Sánchez Mejías. Cantigas also performs excerpts from Romancero Gitanocomposed by Castelnuovo Tedesco for chorus and classical guitar, also based on poetry by Federico Garcia Lorca. Mr. Farías will accompany Cantigas in the guitar in the performance of his own composition and in Romancero.
This grand finale also features songs for choir and string quartet: El Tren by Puerto Rican composer Jorge Figueroa, commissioned by Cantigas in 2013; and El viento en la islacomposed in 2014 for Cantigas by tenor and composer Terrance Johns. Other favorites include Libertango and Adios Nonino by Argentinean composer Astor Piazzolla.
There will be a farewell reception to celebrate Cantigas’s extraordinary journey of cultural ambassadorship and musical excellence.

They spend their evenings at Saffron Dance learning something you might not expect: Belly Dance. If you haven’t belly danced before, now is the perfect time to begin. To mark Saffron Dance’s 8th year as a hub for Middle Eastern dance, Saffron is offering FREE introductory “teaser” classes through September 28th. These teaser classes give students a taste of Saffron’s signature 4-week Belly Dance Crash Course program. Created for individuals who are coming to belly dance for the very first time, Saffron’s Crash Courses are structured and easy to follow — absolutely no dance experience necessary! They are perfect for students to learn the basics of Belly Dance. Each week, a new movement is introduced and drilled, building on and incorporating elements from the prior weeks. Particular focus is given to developing correct posture alignment, flexibility, arm positions and paths, fundamental shimmies, basic hip accents, introductory undulations, easy to follow traveling steps and combinations. The SLIGO CREEK HEDGE SCHOOL - An Irish Music and Culture Camp for Youth
Since 1998, the Sligo Creek Hedge School has been dedicated to helping youth experience the joy of Irish music, poetry and culture. Learning Irish traditional music is the heart of the Sligo Creek Hedge School - singing, pennywhistle, bodhran (the Irish drum), even harp and accordion! But we do much more – a daily Tea & Poetry Time, Celtic crafts, lunches at Sligo Creek (perfect for wading), and field trips. We might visit a local instrument builder, stroll with Irish wolfhounds, try the Uilleann (rhymes with "willin") bagpipes, and much more. Our days are filled with fun!

Takoma Groove Camp is a musical, summer day camp for pre-teens and teens who are advanced beginner to advanced musicians and are looking to gain experience playing in a band setting with their peers. Takoma Groove Camp focuses on composing, improvisation, jamming and musicianship and strives to make the young player an all-around better musician. We write original music, play improv games, take field trips, learn how to play in a band with others, be productive and have the most fun possible. Every session culminates in a concert put on by the musicians that proves to be awe-inspiring and loads of fun! See you at Takoma Groove Camp this summer!
