I am in the process of developing a 3-hour workshop for community leaders throughout the country that will be attending a NeighborWorks America "Community Leadership Institute" later in the Fall. The name of the workshop will be "Community-Based Planning: Leading the charge!"
The description is below... My questions to folks that are reading this blog are:
1. What are your thoughts on this topic?
2. What leads and/or experience would you like to share?
3. What are some of your favorite web-sites and/or blogs that most effectively address this issue?
Please share your comments on this blog... I'll post a link to the workshop material when it is completed in the future.
HERE'S THE WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
Cities plan. Counties plan. It seems everybody plans! But, how does a community plan?
Who is involved when the need for a plan is identified? How is the affected constituency — the people that live, work, play and worship — in the neighborhoods impacted by the ‘plan’ engage in the process?
When and where are the meetings or planning sessions held? Why is it that so often the community feels ‘left out’? What if ‘the community’initiated — and led — the process?
In this workshop participants will learn the tools and techniques necessary to lead planning efforts that affect their community. Emphasis will be placed in understanding the existing system so the community can most effectively influence — and indeed, lead! — the process.
Come ready to share your particular situation and how your organization’s involvement in the planning process of your community can lead to measurable, accountable and concrete results.

I think that this will be an amazing workshop. In order for our communities to flourish, we need all hands on deck. We have started a program at the school I work at for our high school students to give back to the community once a week. I feel that this will give them a sense of pride in where they live, work, get their education and play. I would love to hear your thoughts on this program and any ideas if possible.
