VOTE & MARKET: Great Combination Saturday October 23rd

I vote today because yesterday a friend insisted I vote.

My friend explained that Jimmy Carter was running for President and it was our “local calling” to vote for him. (Being raised in Atlanta, GA Carter was our ‘home-town hero’.) This was the first election in which I could vote. The voting age had been lowered to 18 just a couple of years before and I – at the tender age of 19 - was ready, willing, and able to vote. And vote I did; proudly, enthusiastically, and nervously.

Now, over 30 years – and countless local, state, and national elections – later, I still get goose bumps every time I walk into a voting booth. The thought of realizing “the power of one” is still very awesome and awe inspiring… And contagious.

Through the years, I’ve made it a point to ‘talk up’ this wonderful opportunity we have in this country to exercise the privilege to vote.

While the act of voting is certainly an individual, private act, it is our civic responsibility to ensure all people have the opportunity to do so… And dare I say: It is our responsibility to ‘spread the word’ to our family, friends, and foes alike that voting is simply ‘the right thing to do’.

We are so incredibly fortunate to have made it so easy to vote here in Silver Spring. Our new Civic Building is an “Early Voting Site”. You don’t have to wait till November 2nd to vote. Every day (except Sunday) from Friday October 22nd through Thursday October 28th you can come by the Civic Building and vote. Polls are opened 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.

Want to have fun at the same time?
Come by SATURDAY OCTOBER 23rd AND JOIN IN ON THE FUN!

Our Veterans Plaza (right in front of the Civic Building) will be beaming with activity. Saturday, October 23rd is the first of two Saturdays that we’ll have the Fenton Street Market on the Plaza. (They will return every Saturday in the Spring.)

Saturday, October 23rd the Plaza will also come alive with a ‘Get Out The Vote’ rally.

Help us spread the word by posting and reposting the following message in your listservs and e-mailers:

COME BY THE SILVER SPRING CIVIC BUILDING AND VETERANS PLAZA ON SATURDAY OCTOBER 23rd FOR A FULL DAY OF FESTIVITIES… ENJOY THE FENTON STREET MARKET AND THE DOWNTOWN SILVER SPRING FARMERS MARKET; ENJOY MUSIC AND COMMUNITY; AND VOTE WHILE YOU ARE AT IT!... Amen. No matter *who* you are voting for, please, please get out and vote. And tell all your family and friends to do the same. We need to do it for our country, our state, our county.
