TIME SENSITIVE POSTINGS

Help Control Deer In Your Neigborhood

Many of our suburban neighborhoods are overrun with deer.  Deer/vehicles collisions are increasing.  Many residents are being treated for Lyme disease.  The managed hunts in our parks cannot begin to make a dent in the large and growing herds.  Residents can help by learning about bow & arrow hunting, contacting skilled and safe hunters who will take out deer at no cost, and organizing this needed activity on your private property. The Montgomery County Civic Federation has worked with state and county officials to get the regulations on this activity liberalized and getting out information about archery hunting.  Please visit the website HERE for a comprehensive list of documents including regulations for the current hunting season,  "A Citizens Guide to Safe Bow and Arrow Hunting in Residential Communities in Montgomery County", Q&As from an experienced archery hunter, and much more.

What's Happening? (in the Silver Spring Regional Area)

What is going on in Silver Spring? How do we share with others all that is happening? Where can I grab a bite to eat in downtown? Where are the Facebook pages, blogs, etc.? While there may not be a single ‘site’ or place that can answer all these questions, hopefully the links below can help muddle through the vast universe of information out there… Check them out and let us know how to improve them:

[1] Do you have a friend that just moved to Silver Spring? Would you like to know more about “what is going on”? Or, are you planning for that August “stay-cation”? Then you may want to visit our blog posting tailored to those ‘new to Silver Spring’… It can be found HERE.

[2] Is your group, non-profit, business, or institution doing something that is “open to the public and welcoming of all”? Are you planning an event, a meeting, a dialogue, or a community get-together that you want to “tell the world about”? Where do you start? How do you get the word out? Well, there’s a ‘blog posting’ for that as well – not an app though (at least not yet!)  It includes a short list of contacts that welcome listing what you are doing… It can be found HERE.

[3] Are you getting our exciting, informative, and full of useful tid-bits e-mails (via “MailChimp”)?  If not, then you want to sign up to receive these e-blasts… Just go HERE.

[4] So, where exactly can we find a list of Facebook pages, blogs, and web-sites that are focused exclusively on Silver Spring? Well, the single ‘point of entry’ may not yet exist. But in the meantime, you may want to visit a somewhat imperfect (and definitively incomplete) list that we began a while back… While not ready for prime-time, it might be a start*.  (*Please do help us improve it by leaving your comments on what is missing, broken or outdated links, etc.)… The “list of lists” can be found HERE.

[5] While our Regional Area encompasses all of Silver Spring south of the Beltway (and Four Corners), we also work closely with “all things downtown”.  If you have not checked out the mobile version of our downtown web-site, you may want to do so and add it to your mobile device. The site focuses on our wonderful arts, entertainment, and culinary experiences in our downtown area (from the College up to Spring Street, including all the great restaurants on Georgia Avenue, the entertainment venues on Colessville, the living opportunities and retail on East/West Highway, the fun on Ellsworth, and the growing number of establishments on Fenton.)… The site is:

[6] Finally: Are you ready for our Tweets? We’ve taken the plunge and have begun Tweetting about our work in the Silver Spring Regional Area… Find us at @Reemberto

How to share with others what your organization is doing in Silver Spring

.....................................................
First things first:

The “Holy Grail” of a single portal, Facebook page, web-site, mobile-app, or FM radio station where you can tell the world the wonderful things your organization is doing simply does not exist.

For the past year, the Silver Spring Regional Center has begun releasing regular e-blasts that consists of a combination of civic meetings, community gathering and celebrations, and sample of fund-raisers and ticketed events. We do this as part of our mission to be “the eyes and ears of the community to County government – and vice versa.”  We also do this because we help “staff” the Silver Spring Arts & Entertainment District; and, we manage the Silver Spring Urban District.

Of course, we are not – and never intend to be - THE single source for information for all the amazing things going on in the Silver Spring Regional Area, which includes over 25 identifiable neighborhoods, eight commercial hubs, a major downtown area, and an incorporated City (Takoma Park) with its own downtown; and many great venues, countless restaurants, commercial entertainment opportunities, community serving non-profits, and over 60 faith communities.

We certainly appreciate and welcome you letting us know what is going on. We hope you will continue having us on your mailing list – or add us to it if we are not already.  Please send it directly to:
In return, please do subscribe to our e-blast. Go HERE to sign up. (We promise it is easy to unsubscribe if these e-blasts get to be spam for you.)

If you are looking for other sources to expand your message and reach the broadest audience possible for that next function, here’s some pointers we hope are helpful to you.

HANDY DANDY LIST OF PLACES TO POST WHAT YOU ARE DOING

There are a handful of media outlets that welcome knowing about what is going on in the community and provide an excellent place to let the “general public” know about what you are doing. Among these are:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/gog  Washington Post’s “Going Out Guide.”  Make sure you ‘search’ for Silver Spring…  Solid listing of commercial opportunities.

http://silverspring.patch.com/events/category/family   “Silver Spring Patch” events calendar…  An excellent ‘searchable’ event listing.

http://www.takoma.com/calendar  “The Silver Spring Voice” events list…  Easy to read list.

http://www.gazette.net/section/calendargzevents   “Gazette.Net”…  Maryland Community News Online.  Probably the most comprehensive list of events, with easy to follow web-link.

There are also certain public sites that do a great job listing opportunities to enjoy community, focusing mostly on arts, entertainment, and performances.  While these sites may require registration, membership, and/or a fee, they are a great source and reach a focused, targeted population.

http://www.creativemoco.com/calendar  "Do and Go"...  A service of the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County, Do & Go is an online calendar for cultural events in Montgomery County. Festivals, camps, classes, museums, historical sites and performances -- it's all here!

http://www.visitmontgomery.com/events-calendar  “Visit Montgomery”...  The Conference and Visitors Bureau's official site. Very good for all things 'touristy', as well as performances and arts.

http://visitmaryland.org/Pages/Welcome.aspx  “Visit Maryland”... The official site of the Maryland Office of Tourism.  As good of a comprehensive list for 'things to do' throughout the State as there is, focusing primarily on established destinations.

http://www.wamu.org/arts   A simple way to reach the “NPR” crowd. And, your listing may even be featured in their daily “art minute”.

We are fortunate to have in our community two wonderful 'volunteers' that maintain their own list of what is going on relevant to our community.

[ ] Busy Graham releases an occasional e-mail with a list of art-centric events in and around Silver Spring. If you'd like to be added to her list, and/or for her to consider listing your event, please e-mail her at:
busygraham@gmail.com

[ ] Emma Whelan is maintaining a 'marketing e-mail list' to help promote our area. If you'd like to be added to her list, and/or for her to consider listing your event, please e-mail her at:
emmawhelan.ssp@gmail.com

Beyond these, there are of course the often forgotten ‘obvious people-to-people’ places that most organizations have easy access to. Ultimately, nothing replaces “word of mouth.”  Getting our own staff, board members, customers, clients, and friends to help us spread the word and get the function listed in their own virtual and real networks can pay great dividends. Key among these are:
- community listservs
- faith community bulletins
- other non-profits
- affinity groups message boards
Each organization knows best how to maximize their own resources. However it is done, it is imperative that these ‘obvious’ networks be tapped to promote and get the word out to the closest of ‘constituents’, the ‘friends-of-friends’. This is oftentimes one of the easiest and most productive acts that anyone can do without much effort to help the function be as successful as it can be. Yet, this simple approach is all too often brushed aside or not given the attention it merits.

We hope you will take advantage of all the existing tools to help you ‘spread the word’ and look forward to continuing to hear about the wonderful opportunities you create to build community!

See you around Silver Spring,

Reemberto Rodriguez, Regional Director
Silver Spring Area

HUMOR & COMMUNITY - a good mix! (seriously)

I recently finished reading the book "Between Heaven and Mirth", by James Martin, S.J.  Its thesis is - in essence - that people of faith can use a little dose of humor; and that humor helps in the journey of faith.

Lo, to my surprise, I ran across a passage that made me laugh - which is sort of the point of the whole book. The passage links two of my passions: Humor and Community... Here is an edited version of it for your enJoyment:

Humor and community are intimately linked.

In an intuitive way, we get the feeling that jokes are best enjoyed in the company of friends. We tell them at school, at work, at the bar, and at home. They demonstrate intimacy, trust, and a sense of togetherness among those who both tell jokes and listen to them.

Thus one of the most important elements of humor is the intimate connection it fosters among the members of a community. Through jokes we also show our affection for the people who are most important in our lives. By joking with other people we are, in effect, taking care of them and simultaneously telling them that we love them. And by inviting more people to share the same joke, our community expands and becomes more open to the presence of others.

Jokes affirm a group’s identity and, at the same time, make that community far richer by attracting new members. Yet the importance of humor extends further.

Jokes and humor may also be viewed as evidence of changes that occur in the community over time. They point to a shared history, a common past that consists of a litany of dangers, trials, and occasional bouts of real suffering and genuine hardship.

Humor does more than simply “smooth over” or “take the edge off” these rough times. It literally reverses the sentiment of despair into its opposite: hope. Humor thus performs the Janus-like task of looking backwards and forwards in time. It recalls the past, and it sets it squarely before our gaze.

Yet humor, the language of hope and joy, turns our eyes even more resolutely toward the future. By telling a joke we affirm that our relationships are vitally healthy and ongoing, and thus open to change, to further development, to continual deepening...

Wow. This is serious. And funny. Seriously funny maybe...  So, next time you are in one of those tense moments in a community meeting, gathering, or dialogue, remember why the duck crossed the road. (I understand that chickens have filed a class action suit, so I thought I'd give them a break.)

NEW TO SILVER SPRING? WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW!

UPDATED NOVEMBER 19, 2013

(A somewhat biased guide to engaging your new (or reconnecting with your old) community)

So, you just moved to Silver Spring. Or you woke up one day and said "gee, it would be neat to know more about my neighborhood."... Where do you start?

First, you might ask yourself - wasn't that line in a Talking Head song? - "what IS Silver Spring"?...  THAT is a complicated question.

A GEOGRAPHY LESSON

Silver Spring is - it could be philosophically said - a state of mind. It is NOT a city. (At least not in the legal sense. Silver Spring is not an incorporated geographic area of Montgomery County. Rockville is; so is Takoma Park. Silver Spring is a postal address; an UNincorporated region; a commercially designated area. But, it is NOT a city. For certain purposes – and as used by many -  Silver Spring extends north past Wheaton (not a city either!) and Burtonsville (you guessed it! - not a city.)

HOWEVER, for the purpose of community engagement and general civic matters, Silver Spring is understood to be the area in Montgomery County east of Rock Creek Park, west of Prince George County, north of DC, and south of the Beltway (except it also includes the Four Corners community – including Blair High School.) For these purposes Silver Spring encompasses Takoma Park (yes, the "City of"), a portion of Langley Park (the part in Montgomery County), the communities of Long Branch, Montgomery Hills, Lyttonsville, Rose Mary Hills, all the "Woodside" neighborhoods, Indian Springs, and many other self-identified and recognized neighborhoods. This is the ‘bureaucratic’ boundaries of the official Montgomery County government designated “Silver Spring Regional Area”. For the official web-site, visit HERE.

This Silver Spring “Regional Area” is also the area where 9 of the 21 Purple Line stations will be located. It is an area that boasts at least seven identifiable commercial hubs. (Can you name them all?) And, it is an area with its own 2-year community college, a university, a public high school, various elementary and middle schools, three public libraries, two (or three, depending how you count) rec centers; an awesome wooden bat college level baseball team; its own cultural center, music venue countless theaters, and an increasing number of restaurants offering music; and, parks and parklands a-plenty.

And yes, Silver Spring also includes "downtown" Silver Spring. While many people may perceive only Downtown to be "downtown", downtown Silver Spring runs from Spring Street down to the DC line; and it includes all the commercial (and hi-rise residential) areas along East Way Highway from Georgia Avenue past Colesville, and all of Fenton Street. Want to see some cool maps for this designated area? Visit HERE….  Downtown - with a capital "D" - is the name of the commercial shopping and eating area built as part of the redevelopment project on Ellsworth Street. It technically does not include the inside of City Place Mall, but it does include Whole Foods... That commercial area (“Downtown” Silver Spring) has its own web-site – see HERE. For the broader “downtown” area website, go HERE – and check out our new mobile version at http://m.silverspringdowntown.com

Confused? Not to worry; just enjoy it all!... (Don’t let the perfect get in the way of the good!)

WHAT'S GOING ON?

(Isn't THAT another song too?) Yelp, Google, Zillow, WalkScore and many other "sites" can give you instant info for what is around here, how things are going, and what is there to do.

HOWEVER: if you want to get the real skin, to truly go beneath the surface, to unveil what is there behind the hype, to go hyper-local – (oh oh, is this getting hyperbolic!?!) - then you have to do some homework, be somewhat analytical, and go beyond the mass-media, obvious "sites".

First stop: the streets. No, not the Streets of San Francisco; the Streets of Silver Spring!... Walk around. Get to know the area on foot. Don't be afraid; most of those dogs on leashes do not bite - except maybe my fat, blind Chihuahua. As great as all the hi-tech toys might be, there's nothing like going hi-touch and simply walking around. You'll be amazed how far a mile (20 minute walk) gets you in Silver Spring. (There's a blog (if not an app) for that: HERE.)

Back to the virtual world: Have you visited our imperfect, incomplete and somewhat out of date "List of Lists" blog posting? It provides you direct links to many sites that provide all sorts of goodies (i.e. useful information.) Link HERE.  What sites do you want to list your event on? Which organizations have Facebook pages? What are the ‘must visit web-sites’? Where are all the blogs in Silver Spring? All of that – and much more – can be linked from the “List of Lists” link above. ... By the way, you could do us a great favor letting us know of corrections, additions, etc., to these lists by simply leaving a comment on the blog. We'll take care of it - eventually... (For example, we just (re)discovered that Docs in Progress keeps all their 'class videos' that deal with Silver Spring in one neat YouTube Channel.  See HERE... Also: We'd love to do a list of all the relevant 'Silver Spring Twitters. If you'd like to volunteer to create such a list, send me an e-mail por favor.)

For many folks reading this, what is going on in the "development world" is critically important. While there's no app for that - at least not yet - there is definitively some excellent links that - with a bit of on-line calisthenics - can provide you more info into what is going on in the development world than what you probably care to know.  (Unless of course if you are impacted by one of the many developments approved, seeking approval, or going through conceptual design.) Anyway: questions about development? Start HERE. Again, the list and links are far from perfect. But hopefully they are a "start." (Don't forget to leave a posting if you discover a better mousetrap – or more up-to-date links!)

A while back (on January 8, 2013), the Planning Department did a session outlining all developments in downtown Silver Spring that are under construction and/or in the planning process... See the PowerPoint presentation HERE... You may also want to view another presentation we did which places these developments "in context"... You can find that presentation HERE

Bonus: Want to learn about your new County (or simply reconnect with that world beyond the beltway and/or - dare we say - Bethesda?) Check out this guide. The Conference and Visitors Bureau (CVB) of Montgomery County has published a Visitor Guide.  View it HERE.  Make sure you see the Silver Spring section and the downtown section... Lots of neat info that you may or may not know about...

HOWEVER: Please NEVER count on only the info on the above sites!... The ‘holy grail’ of a single portal for all the information relevant to everyone simply does not exist. (Sorry Google!)… To get a sense of what is going on relevant to your special wants and needs, you will have to work at it… There’s no substitute for that. Sorry.

IN CONCLUSION (OR, IN SUMMARY)

If you've read this far you are obviously highly interested in this stuff, have an inquiring mind, or simply care about your community and want to help make it better. Well, in that case here are our FANTASTIC FOUR practical and pragmatic advice for getting to know your community:

[1] Talk to your neighbor(s) and ask them about the neighborhood association in your neck of the woods.

Some are great; others not so much so. All are led by people that care and want to be part of this effort to make things better. (Make sure you inquire about the listservs, facebook pages, etc.!)

[2] Ask around in your faith community, affinity group, yoga class, the guy at the Seven Eleven or laundromat, your hairdresser, or the soccer coach.

That is, nothing (nada!) replaces people-to-people "hi-touch" good ol' fashion conversation… For example, hangout in your local watering hole, neighborhood store, or community co-op…  You’d be surprised at what you’ll learn there!

[3] Volunteer with a locally serving non-profit.

National and international efforts are great. But, if you want to get to know your own community, seek out volunteer opportunities with one of the many (many!) wonderful locally serving non-profits in our area. I bet you there’s a locally serving non-profit for whatever interests you. Youth, arts, elderly… Whatever!

[4] Attend a meeting of one of the area's major Advisory Groups:

Montgomery County has many "Boards, Committees, and Commissions" that provide opportunities for community members to participate in the civic discourse and provide advice to the elected local officials. These meetings are OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. Everyone is invited welcome to attend. There are four Advisory Groups that are of particular relevance to the Silver Spring Regional Area. These include:
  • Silver Spring Citizens Advisory Board - Meets 2nd Monday of each month*, 7:00 p.m. at the Civic Building (Committees meet 4th Monday of each month*. 7:00 p.m.) See HERE for more.
  • Silver Spring Urban District Advisory Committee - Meets 3rd Thursday of each month*, 3:30 p.m., at the Urban District Office (at the Fire Station.) See HERE for more.
  • Silver Spring Arts & Entertainment Advisory Committee - Meets 2nd Tuesday of every other month*, 7:00 p.m. at the Civic Building. See HERE for more.
  • Silver Spring Transportation Management District - Meets 2nd Thursday of each month*, 8:00 a.m., at the Discovery Communications Building. See HERE for more.

(*Some months may change the exact date of the meetings due to Holidays. Details are usually provided far in advance through this e-blast.) {See HERE for complete list of all "B/C/C" in the County... See below for current vacancies. Application is open to all County residents.}

You might be surprised about what you'll learn there too! (If you sign up for our e-blasts you'll get reminders of these exciting meetings.)

…hope this is helpful to you.

See you around Silver Spring,

Reemberto Rodriguez, Regional Director
